The choice of FTL or LTL depends not only on the size of the cargo. FTL means a separate vehicle for one shipment, LTL means consolidation of different cargoes in one direction.
Advantages of FTL
With a full vehicle, a direct route is possible and fewer warehouse operations are required. FTL is suitable for high volume, time-sensitive, temperature-sensitive or security-sensitive cargo.
Benefits of LTL
For multiple pallets or an incomplete vehicle, LTL allows you to split transport costs. Due to consolidation and distribution, the term may be longer than FTL.
How is the price determined?
In FTL, vehicle type, route, distance and wait are important. LTL takes into account weight, volume, pallets, stackability and terminal operations. Non-standard sizes significantly affect the tariff.
Why are cargo properties important?
For fragile, hazardous, temperature sensitive or incompatible cargo, consolidation may be limited. The loading method and packaging must be checked in advance.
Rule of thumb for selection
Provide addresses, dimensions, weight, number of pallets, ready date and delivery priority. Compare not only the tariff, but also the term, number of operations and risks.
Choose a model by address and route
FTL and LTL need to be compared along the entire chain, and not just at the rate per kilogram or pallet. Within road transportthe type of vehicle, loading method, consolidation, terminal processing, border, documents, waiting and acceptance rules at the final address are specified.
For shipments of European origin, the original data, CMR, transit, backup route and last mile are described in Europe-Azerbaijan route plan. The final model is confirmed only after checking the compatibility of the cargo and the current availability of the carrier.
In your written proposal, also check the currency, validity period, exclusions and how additional costs will be agreed upon.
FTL vs LTL at a glance
| Criterion | FTL (dedicated truck) | LTL (groupage) |
|---|---|---|
| Suitable volume | Most of a standard curtain-side semi-trailer (typically 33 Euro pallets, 86–92 m³ or roughly 20–24 tonnes) | 1–10 pallets, small consignments |
| Pricing basis | Price per truck per lane | Per pallet, weight or volume |
| Timing | Direct run without stops | Consolidation and distribution hubs added |
| Damage risk | Lower | Higher due to extra handling |
Model selection on the Türkiye, Russia and Europe lanes is explained on the road freight page and the route pages.
Frequently asked questions
From how many pallets does FTL pay off?
There is no universal threshold; from roughly 10–12 pallets, and for urgent, fragile or temperature-sensitive cargo, FTL should be compared on total cost.
How many times is LTL cargo re-handled?
At least at the consolidation and distribution hubs, with possible extra terminals in transit countries. That is why packaging and labelling matter so much.
