The basic tariff is only part of the costs of container transportation. Errors in documents, port and container handling can lead to demurrage, detention and storage.
Difference between demurrage and detention
The rules depend on the line and port, but demurrage is usually associated with exceeding the free period in the terminal, and detention is associated with the late return of the container after export.
Critical dates
The arrival of the vessel, submission of documents, customs clearance, removal and return of empty containers must be controlled in one calendar.
Preparation of documents
Bill of Lading, release form, invoice, packing list and permits are checked prior to arrival. A missing document increases the time in the terminal.
Vehicle and unloading plan
The vehicle, driver, address mode and equipment must be prepared in advance. Delayed unloading puts the return date at risk.
Practical control
For each container, the owner, the last free day and the next operation should be visible. Clarifying included port charges reduces the risk of unexpected surcharges.
Manage costs before confirming your booking
The risk of demurrage, detention and storage is reduced not after arrival, but when preparing the booking. Before ordering sea transportation Specify in writing the free time, documentary cut-off, the procedure for notification of arrival, the place for returning the empty container and the person responsible for each date.
The choice of individual container or consolidation also changes the processing and cost structure. To prepare a solution, use comparison of FCL and LCL, and in the commercial proposal, ask to separately show origin, freight, transit, destination, customs and last mile.
